We’ve all been there, preparing for a big event that may be a tear jerker like a wedding. We are trying to find the one mascara that will give us the darkest, thickest, and longest lashes possible, but also not bleed all over our faces when we are tearing up in front of everyone. It is times like this that we may find ourselves fancying the waterproof variety of mascara. Hoping that this will prevent it from running down your face as you tear up in front of everyone.

Waterproof mascara contains NO water and therefore making it very difficult to remove. Soap and water will not be enough to remove these, you will need a stronger oil based makeup remover. Removing mascara every night before bed is very important, as leaving it on leads to unwanted bacteria build up and inflammation.
Not removing your mascara before bed can lead to allergic type reactions under the eye lids. Hard concretions like deposits that are black in colour may develop, which can potentially require surgical intervention to remove them.
Waterproof eyeliner is another hard to remove product that should be avoided.
A lot of companies are also producing fibre-based mascaras that claim to offer more volume and lift. However, they are more likely to flake and shed onto the ocular surface causing more irritation and dryness to the eyes.
Proper care and hygiene should also be taken when using mascara. You should replace your mascara every 3 months! Studies have shown how at the end of the 3 month period bacteria begins to grow in the tubes.
When looking for a mascara you want to read the ingredients. Make sure it is free from:
- Fragrances
- Silicon
- Alcohol
- Lead
- Fibre
- Parabens
- Preservatives
- NOT waterproof
